Job Description:

Reporting to the Board of Governors, the President & Chief Executive Officer will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for SA Youth’s staff, programs, operations, facilities, fundraising, execution of its mission, and implementation of its strategic goals and objectives.  The President & Chief Executive Officer must develop and maintain a deep knowledge of SA Youth’s programs, operations, and strategic and business plans.  The President & Chief Executive Officer gives direction and leadership towards the achievement of SA Youth’s philosophy, mission, strategy, goals, and objectives.


Leadership & Management:

  • Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; recommend timelines, budgets, and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals.

  • Actively engage and energize SA Youth’s volunteers, Board of Governors, Community Advisory Board, committees, partnering organizations, and funders.

  • Ensure effective systems to track progress, and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the Board of Governors, funders, and other constituents.

  • Work closely with the Board of Governors to continually assess strategic plans, goals, and objectives.

Board Development & Support:

  • Develop, maintain, engage, and support a strong Board of Governors; serve as ex-officio member of committees of the Board of Governors; seek and build board involvement with strategic direction.

  • Advise and inform Board of Governors members; interface between Board and staff.

  • Ensure that there is quality development, maintenance, engagement, and support of a strong Community Advisory Board.

Financial Management and Stewardship:

  • Recommend annual budget for approval by the Board of Governors and prudently manage SA Youth’s resources within budget guidelines according to current laws and regulations.

  • Ensure exemplary stewardship of SA Youth’s resources.


  • Oversee all of SA Youth’s fundraising, including identifying resource requirements, establishing goals, researching funding sources, establishing strategies to approach funders, ensuring SA Youth has highly skilled and well-trained development staff, ensuring proper submission of funding proposals and requests, and ensuring proper administration of fundraising records and reporting.

Human Resource and Volunteer Management:

  • Lead, coach, develop, and retain high-performance senior management team.

  • Effectively develop and manage the human resource efforts of SA Youth, including paid and volunteer staff, according to authorized personnel policies and procedures that fully conform to current laws and regulations.

Program and Service Delivery:

  • Oversee the design, marketing, promotion, delivery, and quality of programs, strategic partnerships, products, services, and activities of SA Youth.

  • Implement SA Youth’s strategic plan.

Community and Partner Relations; Public Relations:

  • Promote SA Youth and its mission, ensuring that programs, services, and activities are consistently presented with a strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders and the general public.

  • Build effective and strategic partnerships with school districts, other government entities, nonprofits, academic institutions, and the private sector.


  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree; preference for a graduate degree in business management, public administration, leadership, or nonprofit management.

  • Significant and proven leadership skills, with at least 10 years of senior management experience.

  • Excellence in nonprofit organizational management, development, marketing, communication, administration, and personnel management skills essential.

  • Proven ability to coach staff, manage and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and develop and manage a budget.

  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning.

  • Understanding of nonprofits; experience working with a board of directors and volunteers.

  • Ability to build collaborations with diverse parties.

  • Proven success at fund development including ability to attract foundation, government, and corporate grants. Established relationships with major San Antonio area funders strongly preferred.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Strong work ethic with a history of significant achievements; passion, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed.

  • A passion to serve and advance urban youth in San Antonio essential; experience working with education and youth services preferred.

  • Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.
