Balch Springs Arts Alliance Formed
Sandra Wood

April, 2009

There’s a new spotlight in Balch Springs set to burst onto the scene in June 2009. It’s the new Balch Springs Visual and Performing Arts Alliance (EIN 26-3458656). Whether you’re dazzled by sight, sound or movement, the new arts alliance has something for you. Three local residents have joined forces to ‘kick start’ the alliance. This trio or rather the Board of Directors represents three different genres of the arts. Dr. Gordon, Grammy nominee and well-known musician, is proficient at 27 instruments and has performed all over the world with his 16-piece orchestra. Alvester Gibson, arts entrepreneur, is former owner of House of Knowledge book store and fine art gallery in Texarkana.

There he featured gallery showings and surprise celebrities. Sandra Bellamy Wood has over 25 years of experience as a singer, instructor and musical director. She directed “Art For Kids Sake” presenting children’s opera to over 5,000 children per year in the mid-nineties. As for why they started the arts alliance, T-Byrd said “We want to bring the community together. There are many talented individuals in our city and we want everyone to share and enjoy the spotlight!” This ‘spotlight’ will include a venue for local and professional artists as well as wholesome family activities for the community.  Activities promoting visual arts will include gallery showings, hands-on workshops / arts appreciation classes, and a continuation of Balch Springs: The Early Days and a temporary art exhibit installed by local historian & volunteer, Marilyn Kosanke. Activities promoting the performing arts will include a community choir, music and theatre workshops, instrumental/songwriting seminars and a continuation of the Dr. Larry “T-Byrd” Gordon Cultural Art Series started in June 2007. “Our goal is to promote and nurture the arts, our local heritage and the various cultures that make up our community” said Ms. Wood. “We already have a strong list of singers, musicians, dancers and visual artists who are excited about this new opportunity.”
