It’s everyone’s favorite dessert – chocolate. And what better day to learn more about chocolate than on Valentine’s Day? The San Antonio Botanical Garden celebrates its annual Chocolate Day on Saturday, February 14 with special chocolate “flavored” activities scheduled 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. (The Garden is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m.)
Learn more about chocolate through presentations by SABG assistant superintendent Paul Cox and the Garden Guide display “The Botany of Sweets: Cacao, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Coconuts and more”.
See a real cacao tree and its pods that give us such a tasty treat. Try samples of different types of chocolate. Each visitor will receive a free chocolate mint plant (while supplies last) and will want to be around for the giant gift basket giveaway.
Kids always love the special activities offered at the Botanical Garden. On Chocolate Day crafts will include making Valentine’s Day rainforest cards and working with chocolate “clay,” as well as learning about the earliest chocolate drinkers, the Mayans. Most activities will take place in the Lucile Halsell Conservatory. Volunteer docents will be on hand to describe the various tropical, palm fern and orchid varieties growing in the Conservatory.
The RK Group will tantalize guests with cooking demonstrations using chocolate – just in time to get new ideas for a Valentine’s Day treat! Samples of coffee and cocoa will be offered (while supplies last).
Music provided by singer/songwriter and naturalist Doug Dalglish.
Be sure to stop by Garden Gate Gift Shop and the Carriage House Bistro both located in the Carriage House at the Garden’s entrance. The Bistro opens early on the weekend to offer a scrumptious brunch menu. Hours are 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday-Sunday; 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Tuesday-Friday.
