Children’s Vegetable Garden Program Begins in February
Press Release

January, 2009

Help kids live a healthier lifestyle by growing their own veggies! Through the Children’s Vegetable Garden program at the San Antonio Botanical Garden, parents can create a lifetime learning experience about gardening.

The Children’s Vegetable Garden is located in a special designated area of the Botanical Garden.  Through the program, garden plots are given to children who tend to them each Saturday. Each child is allotted two 2’x12’ garden plots. Plants and a detailed planting guide are provided for one. The second plot is considered the “Experimental Garden.” Children have fun growing different types of seeds, vegetables, and ornamental annual flowers. Participants plant their own seeds and transplants (with pre-approval from program instructors) or plant seeds occasionally provided by the Bexar County Master Gardeners.

Led by volunteers including the Bexar County Master Gardeners and other volunteer groups, the children learn the correct way to plant and harvest all kinds of vegetables. Parents are welcome as well. Although the child is responsible for the garden plot, this is very much a family affair. Children love to have their own garden and now they can!

The spring program begins Saturday, February 21 and runs through June 6. Classes meet each Saturday 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Garden plots are assigned to the participating child on a first come, first served basis. The cost is only $10 per child age 8-13. Children can earn their Junior Master Gardener certification by participating in this program.

For more information, call the Botanical Garden’s Education Department at 210-207-3270. Applications for the Children’s Vegetable Garden may be picked up at the Garden or visit www.sabot.org to download one. Registration deadline is February 15 so sign up now!

The San Antonio Botanical Garden is located at 555 Funston at North New Braunfels Avenue with free parking. The Garden is operated under the auspices of the City of San Antonio Department of Parks & Recreation. The Children’s Vegetable Garden is offered through a partnership with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service.

Visit www.sabot.org for upcoming events at the Garden such as Dog Days – A Winter Paws on January 24-25 and Chocolate Day on February 14.
