Jackie's Keeping her Eye on the Ball

June, 2007

Exciting new news is happening across Texas every day. Take a look at some of the great emails we have received just this week.

Father's Day is just around the corner...so whether yours is a super dad or a dadolescent...you owe him a delicious BBQ this weekend! Check back here later this week for a great recipe from our favorite chef, Chef Ben Ford, owner of Ford's Filling Station in Culver City, CA who will chow down with his son and his dad this weekend....that's Ethan and Harrison.

Carole Allen from Houston's Sea Turtles reports that they have good news! "We have registered 115 Kemp ridley nests this year surpassing the 112 we had last year." Looks like their efforts to save our precious amphibians are really paying off. Did you know that sea turtles are ambassadors of the worlds oceans; they are also critically endangered.

A note from Nancy Millar, Vice President of the McAllen Convention and Visitor’s Bureau says: McAllen is doing great! As always, there’s lots going on here- we’re all staying really busy, with a brand new convention center, new hotels popping up, our World Birding Center in full swing, and Mexican Nationals filling our stores. That’s a good thing! I’m so pleased to introduce you, via this email, to Annabell Cortina. Annabell is the McAllen Chamber of Commerce’s new Media Coordinator. She’s going to be working with me to get you all the info, photos, quotes, etc. that you might need from us. So feel free to contact either of us- though she’ll probably be easier to catch than I will because of my crazy travel schedule! Thanks for your continued interest in our wonderful part of the world! Note: the World Birding Center is recognized as a world-class birding destination that protects the native habitat while increasing understanding and appreciation of all things bird and wildlife. As they say - go and let your imagination fly!

The Hill Country Memorial Hospital Foundation Donor and Database Specialist Amanda Stevens wrote: We do have exciting news! We are preparing for our bi-enniel gala scheduled for Saturday, September 29.Gala XII: Harvest of Hope will raise money to finalize the purchase of new digital mammography equipment and provide seed money for our new cancer resource center.

The Dallas And Fort Worth AFP Philanthropy Conference is this Friday, June 15th at the American Airlines Conference and Training Center. This affordable one-day conference is perfect for development officers, executive directors and board members (with all levels of experience), who want to increase their fund-raising knowledge, supplement their learning from the International AFP Conference, or are short on time and want a powerful tutorial that is locally and regionally significant. Be there or be square! Look for Jackie Beretta and Lyn Downing (Alzheimer's Association), covering this significant event. You can still register: http://www.afpdallas.org/philconfregistration.asp

This last weekend, friends Bob and Mary Cocke from Austin took us to visit the Bamberger Ranch Preserve near Blanco. J David Bamberger, co-founder and CEO of Church's Fried Chicken has built the largest habitat restoration project on private land in Texas. Thousands and thousands of bats inhabit a man-made cave built to perfection. Their efforts to encourage and teach appreciation of the environment is changing the lives of the thousands of people and students who visit every year. A must read is the new book Water From Stone by Jeffrey Greene, which tells about Bamberger's application of profit incentives to land restoration and nature conservancy.
