San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game

More than one hundred players representing 53 area high schools have been chosen for the San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game presented by H-E-B, a showcase of top area talent THIS Saturday, Jan. 6 in the Alamodome. The game is celebrating its 40th anniversary and features athletes committed to play for some of the top universities in the country, as well as players looking for an additional chance to impress college recruiters with potential scholarships to offer before National Signing Day.

Eighty area high schools' varsity coaches were offered an opportunity to nominate players for the game. Selected players are geographically divided into East and West squads based on the locations of their schools. Larry Hill (Smithson Valley) and Keith Kaiser (Boerne Champion) will coach the East and West teams, respectively.

The game would be not possible without our sponsors, who continue to believe in our vision to make this a memorable experience for all participants and fans. Thanks to our presenting sponsor, H-E-B, our game sponsors, Frost, Whataburger, CPS Energy, University Health System, MUY! Pizza Hut, Powerade, Ancira, BSN Sports and Nike and our media partners, WOAI News 4 San Antonio, the CW35, KABB FOX 29, Spectrum and ESPN Radio 1250. The game will be televised locally on the CW35 and broadcast on ESPN Radio 1250.

San Antonio Sports is proud to host this game. Our mission is to transform our community through the power of sport. Proceeds from the San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game, presented by H-E-B, will benefit our non-profit organization's kids programs that touch the lives of thousands of children each year.

Tickets are $20 and are good for both the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which kicks off at noon, and the San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game presented by H-E-B, which kicks off at 5 p.m. They can be purchased at Ticketmaster or the Alamodome Box Office. Hope to see you there!

Student Athletes Go Beyond the Game

San Antonio Sports has worked to develop Beyond the Game, a character initiative that provides a platform to recognize middle school and high school teams that model key values: respect, selfless service, integrity, caring, personal courage and sportsmanship. We partnered with the U.S. Army and Sinclair Broadcasting to raise the awareness of those teams modeling values through mentorship and community service by recognizing them on air during the CW 35's Thursday Night Lights football games.

We are also recognizing four teams at the  San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game, presented by H-E-B: Alamo Heights High School athletes for their work at the San Antonio Food Bank; Clark High School cross country for their service in Port Aransas after Hurricane Harvey; Lee High School football for helping clear debris after a tornado swept through nearby neighborhoods; and Southwest High School's Fellowship of Christian Athletes for regularly visiting elementary schools in their district to motivate and encourage children to make good grades and stay in school.

Kudos to all the school teams listed below for going Beyond the Game.

Cheer Challenge Winners Add Spirit to All-Star Game
Cheerleaders deserve recognition for boosting the energy and excitement at every game, which is what the San Antonio Sports All-Star Cheer Challenge powered by CPS Energy does. Fans were able to vote online at CW35.com for their favorite cheer squads. This year, 30 schools entered the contest to win grants and the opportunity to cheer on the sidelines of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl or the San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game presented by H-E-B. Winners were determined by an online vote, with the top two receiving a $1,000 and $500 grant respectively. More than 32,500 votes were cast.

2017-18 winners:
Marshall High School
Canyon Lake High School
Medina Valley High School
Brennan High School

Together Everyone Achieves More

Editors Note: LTC D'Angelo Blount, Battalion Commander, San Antonio Recruiting Battalion, delivered this message to athletes, coaches and parents at the San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game players' meeting held last week.

Congratulations to those selected to participate in the 40th San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game on January 6, 2018 at the Alamodome. This is a great opportunity for the young men of San Antonio to display the talents they have shown on the field this past season.

I am excited to witness the efforts of these athletes as they battle it out on the field in what is going to be a great match up. I like to think that the team concept is inspiring and influential, and has put these young men in the positions they are in today.  The Army lives by core values that are the centerpiece of success of the Army team. The Army's core values are Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage, and known as LDRSHIP (Leadership). Soldiers also believe in the TEAM: Together Everyone Achieves More. These same values are essential to the men and women who make the Army and any TEAM successful.

The LOYALTY found in the supporters of your efforts on the field by your coaches, parents and TEAMmates were essential in providing structure and an opportunity for you to excel on the field. It is the same LOYALTY that the Army relies upon for the continued dedication of men and women who serve such a great and successful organization.

As an athlete, it was your DUTY to perform to the best of your ability despite any challenges you may have to overcome. The DUTY of the soldiers who have sworn to define our great nation is the driving force in setting the conditions for the Army to overcome challenges.

The RESPECT that you have for the game is a valued trait that you should show every time you suit up to play.  It is a shared RESPECT that Army officers and non-commissioned officers share whether in or out of uniform.

Your SELFLESS SERVICE, in putting your teammates on your left and right ahead of yourself, contributed to the success of you and your TEAM. The Army TEAM executes SELFLESS SERVICE on a daily basis, sometimes through difficult times where they willingly put the needs of others before their own needs.

HONOR the game with your efforts as you display them on and off the field.  As an Army soldier we must HONOR our traditions, principles and the values that make the TEAM as great.

Your INTEGRITY on the field is the fiber of you and your TEAM and therefore, cannot be compromised.  INTEGRITY remains the core of the ARMY in everything we do. Without it, it hurts not only the organization but also compromises our nation's defense.

You all have PERSONAL COURAGE to walk on to the field of play and give it your all as you thrive to achieve excellence. In our business as soldiers, we must have the PERSONAL COURAGE to face challenging times with the expectations of nothing less than excellence.

The TEAM is and always will play an important part in everything that you do. Great TEAMs are comprised of great leaders performing for one another to help each and every one reach his or her full potential. The United States Army is a great TEAM and is looking for great TEAMMATES!

Together Everyone Achieves More.
