Artwork by Sarah Welch
Free Admission

Lawndale Art Center is proud to present the third installment of SPEAKEASY, a program featuring music, performance, and discussions of contemporary art that takes its cue from the eponymously titled series that took place at Lawndale from 1993-2002. Featuring Mydolls' release of their limited edition collectible red vinyl EP, "It's Too Hot for Revolution," and a Q&A session with friend of the band and former Lawndale Executive Director Mary Ross Taylor, SPEAKEASY will take place on Friday, March 3, 2017, at 7PM.

Mydolls, Houston's original femme punk band, has been part of the music scene since founding in 1978. Part of the first wave punk scene, Mydolls was fronted by girl punk rockers who have since paved a path for women in the arts and continue to empower a new generation of fans. Mydolls continues to play national and statewide shows on a regular basis.

Opening for Mydolls is Lazer Kittenz, an up and coming rock band formed at Girls Rock Camp Houston.

Bayou City Art Festival, Memorial Park
March 24 - 26, 2017

This year's Bayou City Art Festival in Memorial Park will spotlight more than 300 artists from 19 different disciplines and benefit six local non-profits. As one of the nation's premier outdoor fine art festivals, the three-day event will feature music, entertainment, food trucks, beverages, a Children's Creative Zone and much more. Now entering its 46th year, the Art Colony Association has raised $3.5 million for local non-profit programs through the festivals, and a percentage of the proceeds support local art organizations and nonprofits like Lawndale!

As a non-profit partner, Lawndale is asked to help staff the festival with volunteers like you! All volunteers will be able to enjoy the festival at no cost before and after their shift. After every volunteer shift, volunteers will be entered in a raffle and have the chance to win prizes including gift cards to local restaurants, movie and museum tickets.

We are in need of volunteers in the Creative Zone to work alongside Lawndale staff as we create "Pebble Pals" inspired by Russell Etchen's mural, About ___ Rocks.

2017-2018 Call for Exhibition Proposals
Due Wednesday, March 15, 2017 (Midnight - CST)

Lawndale Art Center is an alternative art space founded in 1979. For over 36 years, Lawndale has dedicated itself to the support of contemporary art with a particular focus on the work of Houston and Texas-based artists.

Lawndale is pleased to announce an open call for submissions from artists and curators locally, regionally, and nationally for our traditional galleries, Mural Project, Sculpture Garden, and other non-traditional sites including the elevator, stairwells, windows, and other forms of intervention.

Exhibitions selected through this open call will be programmed through September 2017 - June 2018. Applicants will be notified by April 15, 2017.

Artist Studio Program Application
Due Saturday, April 1, 2017 (Midnight - CST)

For ten years, ASP has provided artists with a monthly stipend and access to a private studio. Next year, this support will be enhanced with an increased focus on the development of new work and ongoing practice. How does developing a creative practice in Texas differ from elsewhere? What can regionalism mean in 2017? We are seeking ASP participants who will engage Lawndale as their hub-not only as a place for experimenting, making, and showing work but also as a site for critical engagement and questions like these.

In 2017 - 2018, Lawndale ASP will be full of experimentation, pilot programs, and Texas road trips. As we hatch plans, we have revised our application to better identify competitive applicants that are the right fit for the ASP. We are looking for Texas/Gulf Coast-based artists of diverse backgrounds and experiences, working in any media, whose practice would benefit from the support we can offer.

Lawndale Art Center develops local contemporary artists and the audience for their art.
