San Antonio Sports receives largest grant ever
San Antonio Sports' school parks are about to get a real boost! Last week, we received the largest grant in our organization's history -- $1,375,000 - from the John L. Santikos Charitable Foundation, a fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation. This five-year, $275,000-per-year naming rights grant will support our school park initiative, previously called SPARK, which turns elementary and middle school property into neighborhood parks to be enjoyed by students during the school day and neighborhood residents outside of school hours. The funding of the school parks is a collaborative effort that includes the City of San Antonio and area school districts.
The grant funds will be used to construct prominent entry gates with the school name that will clearly mark the property as a John L. Santikos School Park, instilling pride in each campus and visibly inviting the public to take full advantage of the exercise and recreational facilities after school hours. The grant will also provide for enhancements to existing and future parks. Currently, there are 17 completed school parks and another nine under contract.
Research shows that when people have access to parks, they exercise more. The beautiful signage this generous grant will provide will make it even easier for families to identify the great school parks only blocks from their own homes.
We are grateful to the John L. Santikos Charitable Foundation for this tremendous opportunity to impact the health of our city.
