2016-2017 Lawndale Artist StudioProgram Residents Announced

Lawndale Art Center is pleased to announce the residents for the 
eleventh round of the Lawndale Artist Studio Program. Artists selected for the program are 
Melinda LaszczynskiRandi Long and Sarah Welch.
 
The program will provide these artists with non-residential studio space for nine months (September 2016 - May 2017) on the third floor of Lawndale Art Center in the heart of the Museum District. The artists will have full access to their studios 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Each artist will receive a $500 monthly stipend for the duration of the program and a $1500 unrestricted materials allowance. At the completion of the residency, works produced during the program will be exhibited at Lawndale Art Center in May 2017
 
The 2016-2017 residents were selected by a panel of three arts professionals;
Natasha BowdoinArtist & Lawndale Programming Committee member; Evan Garza, Assistant Curator, Modern and Contemporary Art, Blanton Museum of Art; and Lynne McCabe, Artist & former Artist Studio Program participant.
 
30 artists have participated in the Lawndale Artist Studio Program since its inception in 2007. Through the program, Lawndale has provided over $170,000 in direct financial support to local artists for the creation of new work.
 
The Lawndale Artist Studio program is generously supported by the John P. McGovern Foundation.

About the Artists:
 
Melinda Laszczynski received her MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Houston in 2015 and her BFA in Painting from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2010.  She recently had solo shows at Cardoza Fine Art and galleryHOMELAND in Houston, TX. She has participated in group shows at multiple venues across Texas, including Galleri Urbane (Dallas), Lawndale Art Center (Houston), and was recently included in the 2015 Amarillo Museum of Art sculpture biennial. She has also shown at Forum Artspace in Cleveland, OH and SOHO20 in NY, NY. Her work is included in the collections of University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, and UT Tyler in Tyler, Texas. Laszczynski was featured in New American Paintings MFA Annual #111 (2014) and #123 (2016).

Randi Long received her BFA in Sculpture from the University of Houston in 2014. She was an artist in residence at Project Row Houses and Alabama Song in 2015. Long collaborated with Gabriel Martinez and James Racliffe for the project Noise Truck, which received an Idea Fund Award in 2016 and 1stPlace, Grand Trophy for Best Music, at the Orange Show's 2016 Art Car Parade. Long has performed in projects with Nameless Sounds at AvantGarten, DiverseWorks and MECA.
 
Sarah Welch is an artist, illustrator and comix-maker. After receiving her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and moving to Houston in 2012, she began the ongoing comic book series, Endless Monsoon. Welch is a recently initiated co-organizer with Zine Fest Houston and regularly published prints, zines and comics in collaboration with local print shop, Mystic Multiples. She is a past Idea Fund recipient and former resident with UT Dallas CentralTrak. The latest chapter of the Endless Monsoon saga will be released as part of an exhibition at Rice University's Emergency Room Gallery in fall 2016.
