The Power to Give Foundation
Danyel Surrency Jones

April, 2016

Giving back has always been an important part of my foundation as a child. At an early age, I will never forget the feeling I experienced spending time volunteering at homeless shelters or doing odds and ends projects for the elderly as a Girl Scout. The smiles, gratitude and feelings of hope expressed, helped me understand the true meaning of life was to understand how I can use my gifts and resources to help breathe life and inspiration into someone else. When my husband Darnell and I began POWERHANDZ, Inc. in July of 2013, our goal was not only to start a great company but to give back to our community with our first dollar. Therefore, we also launched the Power to Give Foundation at the same time.

The mission of the Power to Give Foundation is to build legacies of service that increase a commitment to athletic and academic excellence. We aim to inspire and encourage youth in underserved communities with targeted and structured programs to help establish a performance plan for life. Our vision is carried out through programs that enhance academic and athletic success and provide life skills and leadership training which promote the core values of the community we serve.

We know phenomenal talent is located in all demographic areas and that talent deserves resources to help it shine; especially our youth. If we don’t have programs to help foster that talent, our youth will have an unfair advantage in benefiting from the undisputed impact that athletic, educational and career development programs have on the overall stability of the communities we serve.

Our foundation has supported numerous organizations including the Boys and Girls Club, the David Ortiz Children’s Fund and Man-Up. We also developed a Power to Fight Program during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to a local athlete who was suffering from stage IV breast cancer. Additionally, we’ve supported many middle and high school clinics and camps.

One of our major projects currently in development is revamping the basketball program at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Fort Worth by creating athletic clinics and career development programs. With our help, they were able to get new jerseys, shoes, team banners and an end of the year celebration and awards program.

In February, we also held a private screening of the movie “Concussion” for 100 youth in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area to focus on player safety for youth athletes. The event featured a red carpet entrance for guests from the Boys and Girls Club of Dallas, Top Achievers, Man-Up and several top youth athletes and athletic programs. There were fun giveaways, the screening of the movie and a panel discussion with former NFL Wide Receiver Bethel Johnson, NFL Veteran Safety, Jordan Pugh and DFW Neurologist, Dr. Julio Andino.

The pure joy and happiness we saw from the kids in attendance is what makes it all worth it. Not every child gets to go to the movies and enjoy the cinema experience that most of us take for granted. In addition, we want to develop leaders who understand every aspect of the game they are playing.

We believe the programs we create will develop life-long skills in our youth including discipline, leadership, hard work and teamwork. We measure success by one child, one program and one community at a time. The best feeling in the world is when a child or parent comes up to us and thanks us for inspiring them. Our belief is, if they are given the proper tools, resources, and guidance, they are more likely to fulfill their destiny.

As the President of the Board, I can say that while we feel like our efforts are fulfilling our mission and vision, we are consistently striving to do more. We have only scratched the surface of the potential for the Power to Give Foundation.
