2016 WOMEN BUILD KICKOFF: EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH SHELTER
Houston Habitat for Humanity

March, 2016

"The most emotional moment was seeing my roof go up.” That’s what Habitat homeowner Shakaon Jenkins said about the empowering experience of building her first home.  She’s the 2015 recipient of the House that Ching Built/Dynamo Charities home.  Houston Habitat for Humanity kicks off Women Build 2016 at a special opening reception on Thursday, March 31stat the Phoenix Tower, 3200 Southwest Freeway from 6pm to 8pm.  This kick-off reception celebrates Women Build which officially starts on Thursday, April 28th, 2016.

Houston Habitat for Humanity Women Build is designed to empower women to build their own dreams.  In our 2016 Women Build Kick-off, we’re saluting three strong Houston women leaders in their community—Shakaon Jenkins, Marilyn DeBlaws, and Vivian McGee.  All of these new Habitat homeowners put in 300 hours of “sweat equity” and diligent work to achieve their dreams of owning their own home and giving their families the safe shelter they deserve.

Through Women Build, Houston Habitat for Humanity seeks phenomenal women leaders to partner with us and help address the critical need for affordable housing in our community.  With the Houston community’s support, we can build homes for hard-working, low-income Houston moms and families.

The impact of homeownership for these women and their families is enormous, both social and economic.  Homeownership helps break the cycle of poverty, leads to improved health, fosters greater achievement in school for children, builds stronger connections to the community and leaves a positive legacy for generations to come.

The homes will be built in Houston Habitat’s newest community, Harrell Park in northeast Houston, which will be home to a community of 111 families by the end of 2016.
