Houston Habitat 1,000th House Celebration Culminates with Breakfastand Affordable Housing Symposium
Houston Habitat for Humanity

October, 2015

Houston Habitat is hosting a special guest this week. Clive Rainey, the first volunteer Habitat for Humanity International, will visit Houston for the first time and address attendees at their Building a Dream Breakfast Tuesday October 27th has been a steadfast champion for Habitat and its mission at home and abroad, raising awareness and resources for Habitat’s mission and work worldwide. As Habitat International’s first director in Africa, Rainey was a pioneer in global housing relations, advocating that Habitat will never be limited by one approach or one solution to the need for decent, affordable housing around the world. Because of this, “Every few minutes, somewhere in the world, somebody gets a new house.”

From a small idea hatched on a South Georgia farm to a household name, Rainey introduced the concept of sweat equity for future Habitat homeowners.

Rainey retired in 2010 as HFHI’s Director of Community Relations, but continues to stay involved in Guatemala as a volunteer where Habitat Guatemala has built more than 30,000 homes. Rainey devotes much of his time with a ministry rescuing homeless children from the streets and providing them with the necessities of life, from housing, clothing and food to educational opportunities.[i]
