Meet S.A. Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2016
One of our most anticipated announcements every year is learning who will be inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame. The twenty-first class entering the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame was announced Monday at our annual San Antonio Sports Charity Golf Classic and it didn't disappoint.  Fifteen-time NBA All-Star Shaquille O'Neal, Baylor track standout and anchor of the 2004 U.S. Olympic 4x400-relay gold medalteam Darold Williamson, someone well known to the San Antonio Sports family, former Northside ISD aquatics coach and administrator and San Antonio Sports founder and former chairman George Block, plus the 1989 Cole High School Class 3A Championship basketball team will be recognized at the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016 in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. O'Neal and Block joined the press conference by phone, with Williamson and Cole High School Coach Dave Madura and back-up center Andy Armando present.

These deserving individuals and team were chosen after a process that began this summer. It started with open recommendations through public nominations via the San Antonio Express-News. Potential inductees where then submitted to a panel of 90, which includes members of the Hall of Fame and community representatives, who reviewed nominations and provided multiple candidates in each voting category. A committee of 12 representing the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame tri-chairs (San Antonio Sports, the City of San Antonio and San Antonio Express-News) had the tough task of making the final decision. We are grateful to all who participated in this process!

You won't want to miss the black-tie San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute, which serves as the official induction ceremony for the Class of 2016! The event will be held in the new Stars at Night Ballroom at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and will feature a live performance from The Fab Four, a nationally-renowned Beatles tribute band. This is our largest fundraiser, and proceeds from the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute benefit San Antonio Sports' kids programs. For more information on each inductee or to purchase tickets, visit www.sanantoniosports.org/halloffame. We hope to see you there!

Valor Games Southwest

The transformational power of sport was on display when San Antonio Sports and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hosted the Valor Games Southwest supported by World Car. More than 120 veterans and active duty military with physical disabilities participated in this multi-sport competition. Time and again we heard how sport was an integral part of the rehabilitation process and provided many of these men and women positive and life-affirming opportunities through the world of disabled sports and recreation.

William Morrow, director of talent acquisition for World Car and a veteran, participated in the kayak competition. "World Car recognizes the sacrifices that veterans made just for being willing to serve our country. As a responsible corporate citizen of this city we feel that it is not only our duty to give back to these men and women, but it is our honor to be able to do so." He continued, "For me, it was a chance to connect with other veterans not only here in San Antonio, but from all over the country. We sometimes get tied up in our own lives after our service, and the chance to be able to feel that camaraderie and to have good natured, but stiff, competition lets us all feel connected again." Play for Kids a Smashing Success

The first annual Play for Kids tennis tournament recently took place at Shavano Park Tennis Club, raising almost $15,000! The tournament was developed by San Antonio Sports board member and avid tennis player, Dr. Julie Wiernik, with the Texas Center for Sport Psychology, and Soeurette Shook-Kelly, owner of Shavano Park Tennis Club, and attracted 75 participants. "I feel that I would not be as successful or confident without my participating in sports as a child," said Dr. Wiernik. "The funds from Play for Kids will go towards giving more opportunities for youth to participate in athletics and build confidence and self-esteem. Our tournament provided fun-filled tennis while helping others...what a great combination!"
Volunteers Wanted

The Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon & ½ Marathon is around the corner and thousands of volunteers are needed throughout the weekend. The most urgent need is for race day, Dec. 6.

Come on out and be a part of the marathon finish line, congratulate runners, hand out water, snacks and medals. If you can be part of the race crew, register online at SanAntonioSports.org/volunteer.
