Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) will host a pair of statewide watersport competitions in the Dallas area during the weekend of Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4. The Sailing Competition on Saturday will run from 10:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at Corinthian Sailing Club and Sunday’s Kayaking Competition, held at White Rock Boathouse will take place from 10:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.
Thirty-six athletes and 11 Unified Partners from all across Texas will compete in one of the two water sports. The athletes and coaches will be supported by 20 volunteers.
Among the athletes participating, Matthew Hernandez (Mesquite) will return to the water in a competitive setting for the first time since earning a silver medal as a member of Special Olympics USA’s kayaking team at World Games in Los Angeles last summer. Following his return home from Los Angeles, the City of Mesquite recognized Hernandez at its August council meeting, where it declared Aug. 17, 2015 “Matthew Hernandez Day”. During the program, Hernandez was honored in several other ways, which included Honorary Rd. (between Scyene Road and Military Parkway) being renamed in his honor for 30 days.
Sailors will take part in Monohull levels 1-3 and 5, while kayakers will compete in the 200m Race – doubles tourist or the 200m Race-singles tourist.
These events offer an opportunity to experience Unified Sport competitions, which include people with and without intellectual disabilities.
