April e-Newsletter
Children At Risk

April, 2015

The beginning of spring marks an exciting time for us as we have released our 10th annual School Rankings across Greater Houston! These rankings inform parents, educators, and community members on the performance of local schools and offer a point of comparison to other districts. Our hope is that their release sparks important community dialogue on the quality of public education in Texas and gives parents the information to make the best choice available for their student. Our statewide and additional local rankings will be updated on our website and on TexasSchoolGuide.org in May.

To provide a framework in which to understand the performance of Texas' charter schools, C@R has released a Charter School Report that includes key findings on high-peforming schools, including those that go the extra mile in serving economically disadvantaged students, as well as those that perform poorly and consistently do a disservice to their students. For more information on the state of public education in Texas, explore our Education Resources.

Sincerely,

Dr. Bob Sanborn

GET DOWN FOR KIDS GALA
Special thanks to Lisa Helfman, Tracy Maddox, and Lynn Session for Co-Chairing our 9th Annual Gala, Get Down for Kids at the Bayou Music Center.  This year, The Temptations kept guests on their feet and played some of their most famous hits like “Papa Was A Rolling Stone,” “Just My Imagination,” “Ain't Too Proud To Beg,” “The Way You Do The Things You Do,” and “My Girl" while supporters danced the night away. We are so grateful for all who donated and attended! Please visit our website for a full list of sponsors, and click here to view and order event photos.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM
The Center for Social Measurement and Evaluation in Houston welcomes LaPorcha Carter and Jesus Davila, and the Development team welcomes Sarah Jonas as a Grant Coordinator. C@R is also currently accepting applications for job and internship opportunities in in both the Houston and North Texas offices.

15TH ANNUAL C@R GOLF CLASSIC
We are thrilled to return to the Woodlands Country Club’s Tournament Course, one of the most prestigious courses in Texas, for a fantastic day of golf and philanthropy on Monday, May 11! Enjoy delicious food, wonderful company and an incredible round of golf while supporting C@R and Texas’ children. Our Tournament Host, Melissa Wilson, coordinates amazing surprises at almost every hole with an activity or a gift at each tee box! Cocktails, dinner and a live auction put a perfect end to this perfect day. This is Mark Troth's 4th year as co-chairman of the Golf Classic, and his 5th year on C@R Board. He "welcomes the opportunity to continue working with Melissa, along with co-chairs Sebastian Solar and Tom O’Connor, the C@R staff and golf committee to carry on the tradition and raise funds for C@R to help Texas' children realize the best opportunity for success and happiness in their lives."

EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!
The C@R Institute is excited to announce The Allstate Foundation-sponsored publication of the latest issue of its research journal, Journal of Applied Research on Children (JARC). In this issue of JARC, entitled “Human Trafficking and Domestic Violence: Etiology, Intervention, and Overlap with Child Maltreatment,” we discuss research about how domestic violence and other forms of child maltreatment contribute to human trafficking of minors. Long-time, award-winning activist Rachel Lloyd, founder and CEO of Girls Education and Mentoring Services (GEMS) provided a special commentary on the issue, speaking from personal experience of working with trafficking victims. Check out this heavily inspiring and informative issue online!
