Corporate Cup a Success!
Only three years since its inception, the 2014 Corporate Cup presented by H-E-B sold out with a capacity field of 72 teams! The 2014 event was fun, with fierce divisional battles, t-shirt contests, and lots of free beer and serious tailgating. Roughly 5,000 competitors participated in 13 events under sunny skies at the University of the Incarnate Word on May 31 enjoying camaraderie, exercise and networking with teammates and competitors. Congratulations to our champions: USAA (D1), NuStar Energy (D2), Airrosti (D3) and Clear Channel Outdoor(D4). The team t-shirts were fun with very cleaver slogans. Congratulations also to the winners of the t-shirt contest: Frost (DI), Generations Federal Credit Union (D2), Robert Ober & Associates (D3), and Nature Sweet (D4). Three charities were winners too, with Corporate Cup teams donating more than 631,000 pounds of food to the San Antonio Food Bank, 3,974 pints of life-saving blood to the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center, and 9,500 clothing items and $8,100 in rental assistance for Haven for Hope families. A big thanks to all our sponsors, especially H-E-B, Valero and the University of the Incarnate Word.

Plans are already underway for next year and we're sure to sell out. Look for information soon about registering your team for the 2015 Corporate Cup on May 30 or email jcarnes@sanantoniosports.org to reserve your company's spot.

The Coolest Program This Summer
Fit Family ChallengeHundreds of families are getting fit this summer in San Antonio Sports Fit Family Challenge, presented by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Texas. It kicked off in May at Port San Antonio when 1,500 runners participated in the D4 Heroes 5K. Now families are participating in Zumba and Kid Fit classes at eight locations during the week where they are also receiving nutrition education. "Exercising as a family is not only fun, but we're accountable to each other," says Fit Family Challenge participant Benita Fager. "We also include our friends in activities because the more you hang out with people with similar healthy goals, the more likely you are to stick with it." (Click here to see an interview about Fit Family Challenge on News 4 San Antonio's SA Living show)

On Saturday we will host the family-friendly D6 Fitness 5K, which will also offer a one-mile fun walk, Zumba, health screenings and inflatables for kids. Families that attend at least three weekday events and have their tracking logs stamped are eligible to win $1,000. We'll draw for our first winner on Saturday. Families can join the Fit Family Challenge any time during the summer and the entire program is FREE. To learn more, click here.

Getting Ready for 2015: The Year of Swimming
San Antonio will be the site of the 2014 USA Swimming Southern Zone Championships July 28-Aug. 1 at Northside Swim Center. The meet is a precursor to three big national championships San Antonio will host next summer: the US Masters Swimming Short Course Championships, the Phillips 66 National Championships and the Speedo Jr. National Championships. At the Southern Zone Championships, San Antonio Sports will need 80 volunteers each day to serve as swim marshals and timers. We happily offer volunteer service hours for students 14 & up. If you can help, click here to register to volunteer.

School Parks Change Neighborhoods
In May, four SPARKs (school parks) opened, giving neighborhoods around those schools a new place to exercise after school hours. Eight out of 14 SPARKs planned this year have opened. In San Antonio, SPARK is a partnership between San Antonio Sports, the City of San Antonio, and local school districts. Veronica Arteaga, principal at Passmore Elementary and home of a new SPARK, told the San Antonio Express News that SPARK is already helping students gain a better understanding of why exercise is important. "It's great for the community," she said, noting that children know that exercise makes them stronger and gives them more energy.

Save the Dates
Mark your calendars! The 20th anniversary of For the Love of Kids & Harleys will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 7 at Cowboy's Dance Hall. San Antonio Sports is one of three charities to benefit from the event, and it's sure to be a great party.

On Monday, October 6, San Antonio Sports will host its annual Sports Hall of Fame Golf Classic AND announce the Hall of Fame class of 2015. The San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute will be held Saturday, February 28 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.
