Shumla Meets Year One
Fundraising Goal!

Shumla's staff and Board wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful donors who have helped us to reach our $100,000 grant-match goal for the 2013 year. Your help has been an inspiration to us, and we are grateful that you have contributed to the life of our organization.
Shumla's money cactus is blooming.
In 2014, Shumla's staff will again be working to meet and exceed our fundraising goals.  Andrew Freeman, who will be spearheading the 2014 fundraising initiative, noted "We've already received approximately $20,000 in pledges for the 2014 year, so our priority will be finding the next $80,000 to complete our match. We're also looking to underwrite about $300,000 in costs for the Border Canyonlands Archaeological project (BCAP) and we have need in our endowments as well.  2014 will be a busy year."

For all that you, our donor community, has helped us to achieve, we thank you.

Houston Museum of Natural Science Programs

Shumla's staff will be visiting the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) this February for another exciting round of lectures and education programming.
Education staff will lead a teacher training on techniques for enhancing history and social science curriculums through visual narrative.
On Tuesday, February 25th, 2014, Andrew Freeman will present Shumla's second HMNS teacher workshop "Promoting History Engagement with Visual Narrative." The workshop will be a part of the HMNS Teacher Tuesday program and will provide instructional techniques and information based on methods Shumla has developed for rock art education programming.  Teachers attending the workshop will receive professional education credits and free entry to Dr. Carolyn Boyd's evening lecture following the workshop.
Think Shumla's research team does cool work?  Wait until you see it on an IMAX screen!
At 6:30 p.m., Dr. Carolyn Boyd will present her talk "Insights in Texas Cave Art" in the HMNS IMAX Theater.  Dr. Boyd's talk will create an opportunity for the public to experience Shumla's exciting research in the field of rock art documentation and study in an IMAX format.  This will be a one-of-a-kind opportunity to enjoy the rock art of the Lower Pecos through the amazing innovations pioneered by Shumla's research team.  Admission is $18 and the public can attend the lecture without having to participate in the preceding workshop.  You can purchase tickets and find out more through the following links for the workshop and lecture. Shumla's staff hopes to see all of our Houston friends at these great programs!

Dr. Nadel Visits the Lower Pecos

On December 8th and 9th, Shumla had the pleasure of introducing Israeli archaeologist Dani Nadel and his wife Ronit to the archaeology of the Lower Pecos Canyonlands. Professor Nadel is on sabbatical from his post at the University of Haifa and is in our country collecting comparative data on bedrock mortars and milling features.
Dr. Dani Nadel toured Lower Pecos archaeological sites with Dr. Boyd and an all-star cast of local archaeologists.
Dr. Boyd, Dr. Dering, Mark Willis and Jeremy Freeman joined the Nadels as they explored several sites loaded with bedrock features, cupules and incised grooves: White Shaman, Painted Shelter, and Fate Bell, among others. Of course they also had a chance to admire some of the world's finest rock art. It was a terrific two days, and our lives have been enriched through the experience and by our new friends from Israel.
You never know what you'll find under the rocks in the Lower Pecos.  You might even find Mark Willis.
