Fifteen-year-old De-Janay of Buffalo, New York has been suspended several times for disruptive and truant behavior. She has been described as aggressive, disrespectful and violent in school. In February of this year, Family Services Team referred De-Janay to Southwest Key Community Connections. (read more)

The Journey to Becoming a Leader in the Community

Mekhai, 15 years old, is now a leader in his community, working as a mentor and basketball coach at a local community center in Buffalo, NY. Just a few months ago, Mekhai was not the same person. (read more)

Having a Quinceañera at 17

 

Ms. Yuri, 17 years old from El Salvador, did not have a Quinceañera of her own when she turned 15. After participating in the first annual El Paso Regional Quinceañera, she felt as if the event was held just for her. (read more)

 

In the Hispanic Culture, Food is Our Bond

 

Sonia Gallegos' earliest memory of food is of her grandmother selling groceries out of a small chest in Mexico. Inspired by her mother and grandmother, who spent their lives around food and a kitchen, Gallegos began working in a restaurant.  (read more)

 

Finances: How Can My Family And I Survive?

 

Today, there are financial literacy and planning workshops given by nonprofits, banks, credit unions and others. While there is certainly a lot of interest on the part of participants, attendance is low. (read more)
