THRIVENT FINANCIAL SUPPORTS LSS DISASTER RESPONSE IN WEST & GRANBURY
Lutheran Foundation of the Southwest (LFSW)

August, 2013

The Texas Region of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans® recently presented Lutheran Social Services Disaster Response (LSSDR) with a donation of $10,000 to support relief efforts in West and Granbury, Texas.  Additionally, the local Thrivent Brazos River Chapter collected $4,125 from members and churches in their area to help the residents of both areas in the long-term recovery process.

The two checks were presented to LSSDR staff and case workers, with Pastor Matt Canion of St. Paul Lutheran in Waco in attendance.  Pastor Canion has been actively involved in the early and ongoing stages of the recovery, lending on-the-ground assistance and spiritual support to the West community.

The explosion of the fertilizer plant in West, Texas on April 18, 2013, resulted in loss of life and widespread property damage; the tornado that swept through the Granbury Township on May 15, 2013, led to loss of life and the destruction of more than 100 homes.

“Thrivent Financial’s ongoing support of our ministries is such a blessing,” said Dr. Kurt Senske, chief executive officer of LSS. “These generous contributions will go a long way toward helping the survivors of the West and Granbury disasters get back on their feet.”

Mark Minick, senior vice president of LSS, added that “LSS is so grateful for our valued partnership with Thrivent Financial. Thanks so much to the Thrivent teams and for all they do to make a positive difference in the lives of those in need.”

LSSDR is an affiliated program of Lutheran Social Services of the South, a nonprofit organization serving more than 26,000 children, elderly, and poor in Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma annually.
