NCAA Championship City

The Whole is Greater Than the Sum of its Parts
For the past six months, a unified team rallied together and submitted a top-notch bid for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Swimming. While USA Swimming ultimately chose Omaha, NE to host the Trials, San Antonio can hold its head high. The strong community that came together on behalf of our city and the bid was an example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. The most encouraging outcome of this process was the emergence of a group of unselfish teammates that worked towards a common goal. This strong infrastructure will serve our community well as we continue our work to attract major sporting events to San Antonio.

Our deepest thanks to our partners with the City of San Antonio: Casandra Matej, executive director, San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau, Mike Sawaya, director, Convention Sports & Entertainment Facilities and Nick Langella, general manager, Alamodome. They and their staff members did an outstanding job. We especially want to thank Mayor Castro, City Manager Sheryl Sculley and Ed Belmares, Assistant City Manager for their support. We're also indebted to the Marriott Rivercenter and our many partners in the hospitality community. Ross Davis and Jenny Carnes from SAS put their hearts and souls into this effort and deserve a huge thank-you for their efforts.

The personal dedication of George Block, chairman of the San Antonio Sports board of directors and the leader of our bid effort put us in a position to compete for this event. I think it's fair to say that no one wanted to bring the Trials to San Antonio more than George. A longtime coach and leader locally, regionally and nationally in the swim world, George's insight and guidance were invaluable.

Finally, thank you to San Antonio's enthusiastic swim community and the more than 13,800 people who supported our bid by joining our "I'm In!" online campaign. We are grateful for your support and look forward to future opportunities. San Antonio is a premier destination for major national and regional sporting events and San Antonio Sports will continue to work hard to attract events that deliver an economic benefit to our community and leave a lasting legacy.

Bring Your "A" Game
The registration deadline of May 15 is rapidly approaching for one of the most fun events we do. San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup, presented by H-E-B is a field day for grownups! Businesses large and small, will participate in 13 sports, from the silly to the competitive. From tug-of-war to golf chipping to a track relay, the friendly competition is designed to spur co-worker camaraderie and celebrate workplace health and fitness.

Companies and organizations will be assigned to one of four divisions according to the number of their San Antonio-based employees. Whether running in a 5K or kicking a soccer ball, employees will accumulate points for their teams. They can also earn points in the Charity Challenge, an opportunity to contribute goods and services to three local charities. The Corporate Cup trophy and year-long bragging rights will be awarded to the top team in each division. There's even a t-shirt design contest!

"This is not only a fun event for companies large and small, but it fosters a culture of fitness in our community," says Russ Bookbinder, San Antonio Sports' President & CEO. "It's a win-win-win event. It promotes health, teamwork and camaraderie among co-workers."

Proceeds from the Corporate Cup will support San Antonio Sports' kids programs. Visit for San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup details or call 210-820-2100.

Fun Competition and Great Venues
Game on! Local youth can be a part of the inaugural Bexar County Games presented by Ancira. Registration starts at $5. Competition will be held in track & field (June 15), soccer (June 22-23), swimming (July 20) and basketball (Nov. 9-10). This community-wide youth sports competition will take place in new Bexar County venues that were built with the extension of the visitor tax. County Commissioners approved an agreement with San Antonio Sports who will manage the games. San Antonio Parks & Recreation will also support the games.

The games will provide an affordable way for local youth to participate in athletic competitions and to qualify for the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) State Games of Texas when eligible. TAAF annually hosts winter and summer games that draw thousands of amateur and recreational competitors from all over the state.

Registration is available online. To find out more about each competition and specific registration deadlines, visit
