March, 2013

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Honors College<http://www.utsa.edu/honors/> raised $161,765 for student scholarships, research stipends, and leadership and global learning opportunities last night at its 2013 Great Conversation!<http://www.utsa.edu/great> fundraiser. The event was held at the Institute of Texan Cultures.

The Greater San Antonio community and 18 UTSA honors students gathered at Great Conversation! for dinner discussions on a variety of topics. Community leaders and UTSA scholars led the discussions.

At one table, UTSA sociologist Harriett Romo discussed the importance of investing in the education of San Antonio children. At another table, District Attorney Susan A. Reed separated legal fact from fiction. BarkBusters dog trainer Phyllis McGough led a discussion about dog training. Across the room, T1 Tequila Master Distiller German Gonzalez talked about how to create exceptional tequila.

The UTSA Honors College provides a unique educational experience for academically talented students with a commitment to excellence. It is open to students from all academic disciplines. Honors classes include special sections of regular courses with smaller enrollments and interdisciplinary seminars that bring together advanced students from diverse disciplines.

"UTSA has extremely generous donors," said Harriett Romo. "They have seen the impact that UTSA Honors students are making around the country and they are investing in UTSA to continue that progress."

Great Conversation! was co-chaired by UTSA President Ricardo Romo, Harriett Romo, Kathy Acock, Iñigo Arzac (UTSA B.B.A. '05), Nancy Loeffler, and A.J. Rodriguez (UTSA B.B.A. '98, M.B.A. '00). Some of this year's key sponsors included the Wells Fargo Foundation, Anheuser-Busch Inc, Alpha Building Corp and Pat Flynn.
