NEWS FROM TEXAS STATE: History Department hosts 'Double Lives ofFirst Ladies' symposium

The Department of History at Texas State University will host “The Double Lives of First Ladies: Power, Paradox and Pageantry” Feb. 28-March 1. The symposium will examine the unique status and duties of first ladies from around the world.

Cynthia Enloe of Clark University will deliver the opening keynote address Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Alkek Teaching Theater, and various panel presentations will take place March 1 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in Flowers Hall room 230.


The keynote address is titled “What Do Mary Todd Lincoln and Peng Liyuan Have in Common? Marriages, Elites and Confused Political Cultures.” Panel presentation topics will include Imelda Marcos, Eva Perón, Dolly Madison, Betty Ford, Soraya Esfandiary and the shifting power of Mexico’s first ladies.


All presentations and talks are free and open to the public.


The event is sponsored by the Center for Multicultural and Gender Studies, the College of Liberal Arts, the Common Experience Committee, the Department of History, the Department of Modern Languages, the Department of Political Science and the Equity and Access Committee.
