I joined Literacy Connexus . . .

God directed me to Literacy Connexus through a variety of twists and turns.

I came to Dallas in 2010, and began serving refugees in the Vickery Meadow area. I served through an organization which reaches out to Bhutanese refugees. I fell in love with the Bhutanese friends that I had made, and decided to stay in Dallas. However, I also knew I needed to continue studies; so, I began searching for schools in the area.

I began studies at Dallas Baptist University and completed an MA in Global Leadership with a specialization in ESL in December of 2011.Through a professor at DBU, I learned about Literacy Connexus and an opportunity to work as an intern there. When I met Lester Meriwether, I quickly saw that the organization has similar goals to my personal goals.

Through Literacy Connexus, I am learning how to serve refugees, immigrants, and others with literacy needs in tangible ways. It's been a pleasure to work alongside Lester, Wendy, and Robin. Through Robin Feistel and TEX Trainers, I have learned more about teaching ESL. My fiancé and I are planning to teach English in China, and this internship is great preparation! I am excited to see some of our work come together at a TEX Trainers meeting in February and at the Gulf Coast Literacy Conference.
