San Sntonio Symphony Celebrates the Holidays with 15 Concerts

The San Antonio Symphony will celebrate the beloved music of the holiday season with 15 different performances in late November and December. Starting Thanksgiving weekend, the Symphony continues its annual collaboration with Ballet San Antonio to stage eight performances of Tchaikovsky’s beloved holiday classic, The Nutcracker. The performances are all at the Majestic Theatre on Nov. 23, 24, 25, 30 and Dec 1 & 2, 2012. Akiko Fujimoto will conduct and the choreography is by Ballet San Antonio Artistic Director Gabriel A. Zertuche.

 

Also Thanksgiving weekend, the Symphony begins its new Baroque series with Christmas Baroque on Sunday, November 25 at 7 p.m. at San Fernando Cathedral. Akiko Fujimoto will conduct and violinist Bonnie Terry is the soloist. General Admission tickets are $25 for this baroque concert at San Fernando Cathedral. The concert lasts 75 minutes without an intermission.

The first weekend in December will feature the Symphony’s annual performances of the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah at three area churches. The Symphony and San Antonio Symphony Mastersingers, John Silantien, director will be led by guest conductor Patrick Dupré Quigley. The vocal soloist are Kathryn Mueller, soprano; Cindy Sadler, alto; Eric Schmidt, tenor and John Buffett, baritone. For all three performances tickets are $25 with general admission seating. The concerts last about 75 minutes without an intermission.

 

One of the Symphony’s most popular concerts of the year is the Holiday Pops, which will take place in the Majestic Theatre on December 21 & 22, beginning at 8 p.m. The program will feature Akiko Fujimoto, conductor; The Children’s Chorus of San Antonio, Marguerite McCormick, director, Crystal Smith, soprano and Eric Schmidt, tenor. The program includes Leroy Anderson’s A Christmas Festival, Victor Herbert’s “March of the Toys” from Babes in Toyland, Humperdinck’s “Evening Prayer” from Hansel and Gretel, three songs from the movie Home Alone and other holiday favorites.

 

The Symphony and The Children’s Chorus of San Antonio will also collaborate on Sunday, December 23 at 2:30 p.m. at Laurie Auditorium in a one-hour long Family Concert called Holiday Magic. Pre-concert kids activities including the Instrument Petting Zoo, begin at 1:30 p.m. and will feature vocalist Crystal Smith.
