NCAA Championship City

Thanks to our City Team

It’s no secret that San Antonio is a beloved location for major amateur sporting events. Since 1989, San Antonio Sports-hosted events have generated more than $424 million in economic impact and delivered a memorable experience for athletes and their fans. With our beautiful downtown, plethora of hotel rooms and spectacular fall/winter/spring weather, we often hear that visitors love the Alamo City and would like to return. Our partner for decades in making San Antonio an attractive sport destination is the Convention & Visitors Bureau. They help us secure hotel rooms needed for rights-holders, teams and fans, as well as book city facilities. For example, the CVB books the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center whenever a coaches’ convention is part of one of the premier athletic events we’re hosting.

Sports tourism is increasingly competitive and San Antonio remains a very popular location. We’re glad the CVB is on our team, as well as ALL the city departments that help make hundreds of events possible!

Executive Director

San Antonio Sports Leader Receives Rings of Gold Award
George BlockThe United States Olympic Committee announced that San Antonio Sports founder and chairman of the board, George Block, is the recipient of its 2012 Rings of Gold award. The Rings of Gold award annually recognizes an individual and a program dedicated to helping children develop their Olympic or Paralympic dreams and reach their highest athletic and personal potential. Block was recognized at a celebratory dinner, along with four other annual award winners, during the 2012 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Assembly that took place Sept. 20-21 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Block is a retired Olympic swim coach, athletic director and mentor who worked for the Northside Independent School District for 32 years. Upon his retirement in 2009, the district named its aquatics center in his honor – the George Block Aquatics Center. Formerly the high performance director for USA Pentathlon, Block has served USA Swimming in many capacities, including as vice president and as a national team coach. In addition, Block has been deeply involved in the San Antonio community.

"This is something that I never even imagined,” said Block. “To be recognized by the finest Olympic Committee in the world for a lifetime of work in little San Antonio literally left me speechless."

“George Block embodies the Olympic spirit and has lived its ideals throughout his professional career,” said Dr. Susan Blackwood, executive director of San Antonio Sports. “He has guided thousands of young people to pursue excellence -- in body, mind and spirit. Block has worked to ensure every child, no matter his or her financial situation, has the opportunity to excel in sport, is encouraged in his or her academic pursuits and learns that giving back is simply the practice of a well-rounded citizen.”

Volunteers Wanted
Volunteering! Fall is a busy time at San Antonio Sports. We have several events in November and December and are looking for volunteers.  If you can donate your time and valued energy to the San Antonio Sports, we are looking for assistance with the Big 12 Women’s Soccer Championship, the Rock ‘n Roll San Antonio Marathon & ½ Marathon and NCAA DIII Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championship.  You can sign-up online and pick your shift.  For specific questions, contact David Blank at dblank@sanantoniosports.org or 210.820.2191.

Our volunteer opportunities are highly rewarding, and a great opportunity to meet new people, work for a good cause, earn student service hours and become involved while having fun at the same time!
