The Department of Communication Disorders at Texas State University-San Marcos will host its first Multicultural Intensive Speech-Language Therapy Intervention Clinic (MISTIC) this summer.
This international, summer-long program will allow for the provision of speech-language assessment and intervention services to 14 children from Mexico diagnosed with special needs. The families and their children, from Mexico, will participate in a week's worth of activities including parent training and assessment and intervention with the children so that a recommended intervention program can be implemented once the families return to Mexico.
Also attending MISTIC, will be paraprofessionals who are already providing assistance to these children in Mexico. They will participate in every step of the assessment and intervention process so that they can implement the recommended intervention program upon their return to Mexico.
Maria Resendiz, assistant professor in the Department of Communication Disorders, and Clarissa Rodrigues, bilingual speech-language pathologist/lecturer, will provide follow-up to these families and the paraprofessionals via webconferencing technology during the coming year to adapt the intervention program when necessary.
MISTIC is a joint collaboration between the Department of Communication Disorders and Margarita Ramos from Pro-Ed Latino-Americano in Mexico. For additional information, call (512) 245-2031 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
