__________________________________________________________________________

NAOMI SHIHAB NYE was born to a Palestinian father and an American mother and grew
up in St. Louis, Jerusalem, and San Antonio. Drawing on her Palestinian-American
heritage, the cultural diversity of her home in Texas, and her experiences traveling
in Asia, Europe, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America and the Middle East,
Nye uses her writing to attest to our shared humanity.

Her books of poetry include 19 Varieties of Gazelle: Poems of the Middle East, A
Maze Me: Poems for Girls, Red Suitcase, Words under the Words, Fuel, and You &
Yours (a best-selling poetry book of 2006).

She is also the author of Mint Snowball (paragraphs); Never in a Hurry and I'll
Ask You Three Times, Are You Okay? Tales of Driving and Being Driven (essays); Habibi
and Going, Going (novels for young readers); and Baby Radar and Sitti's Secrets
(picture books).

Other works include seven prize-winning poetry anthologies for young readers, including
This Same Sky, The Space Between Our Footsteps: Poems & Paintings from the Middle
East, and What Have You Lost? Her recent collection of poems for young adults entitled
Honeybee won the 2008 Arab American Book Award in the Children's/Young Adult category.
Two new books are forthcoming in winter 2012: There Is No Long Distance Now (a collection
of very short stories) and Transfer (a book of poetry and prose).

Naomi is a long-standing friend and supporter of The Writer's Garret. We strongly
encourage your attendance at this wonderful, free event Thursday night.

The goal of the HP Literary Festival is to inspire and encourage students to celebrate
language in its artfully written, spoken and sung formats. The two-day festival
will offer special student assemblies with noted speakers, the free community event
and over 75 small group workshops connecting HPHS students with novelists, journalists,
poets, storytellers, playwrights, screenwriters and songwriters. The festival also
includes an exciting student-run Open Mic Nitewhere students share readings, musings,
poetry and musical performances. The festival concludes with a student writing contest
and an awards breakfast.

The HP Literary Festival is made possible with the cooperation of the HPHS English
faculty and by generous donations from La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas, HPHS PTA,
HP Arts, and HPISD families. The Writer's Garret has been a programming partner
for over a decade.  For more information please visit www.hplitfest.org [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=ctqzkybab&et=1109283610066&s=4558&e=001XhWjoOXY0D-q_HvQ4K_JVQwX3o3aTBL2VXa0OcYMafeCrLeOstUlBKMRAEOpc6iL7Ej4NV_XhIL2uP8VcxqvPr2cvUXD9w1HBDg8eFyzRGMDBKnNmMYZkQ==].
