The San Antonio Symphony POPS season begins November 4 and 5 at Laurie Auditorium with Music Director Sebastian Lang-Lessing’s POPS debut. Maestro Lang-Lessing made his Classics series debut in January. The program is called “SLL Salutes America” and it features favorite American popular music from the stage and screen. The Symphony will be joined by three vocal soloists— Soprano Laquita Mitchell, Tenor Chad Shelton and Baritone Lester Lynch. Highlights will include music from Bernstein’s West Side Story and Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. The concert opens with one of the great 1940s film scores: Korngold’s Overture to Captain Blood. Music by Richard Rodgers, Jerome Kern, John Williams and music from the movie The Magnificent Seven will also be included.
Soprano Laquita Mitchell first sang the role of Bess in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess with the San Francisco Symphony in 2009. Last year she sang the role with the Atlanta Opera. Opera News said she “dazzled the audience with her purity of tone and vivid theatrical presence.” Texas native Chad Shelton performance of Carmen last year was praised by the Salt Lake Tribune, “he sang with expression and power as he convincingly portrayed the character's disintegration; José's desperation in the final showdown with Carmen felt painfully real. The audience was engrossed in the action, reacting audibly at several points.” Lester Lynch recently performed Porgy and Bess with the Chicago Lyric Opera and his voice has been called “magnificently powerful” and for having “a facility for shaping coloratura for dramatic effect.”
The POPS series includes six different programs—three at Laurie Auditorium and three at the Majestic Theatre. Future programs on this series include the Holiday Pops, Broadway Rocks (which includes music from Rent, Hairspray, The Lion King and The Phantom of the Opera), Bugs Bunny at the Symphony, Fiesta Pops and Star Wars and other Space Odysseys.
