2011-2012 Pops Series Opens with "Hollywood Classics"
Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra

October, 2011

FORT WORTH — The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra opens the 2011-2012 Pops Series with “Hollywood Classics,” the best in movie music led by Associate Conductor Andrés Franco. The concerts celebrate two different approaches to the use of symphonic music in film, with original scores from Hollywood’s finest composers performed alongside existing classical scores that have become associated with well-known movies.

The three performances are 8 p.m. Oct. 14 and Oct. 15, and 2 p.m. Oct. 16 at Bass Performance Hall. Tickets are $27-$79, on sale now at www.fwsymphony.org or 817-665-6000.

The program opens with “Sunrise” from Also sprach Zarathustra (Richard Strauss) and On the Beautiful Blue Danube (Johann Strauss), both from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The first half also includes, among other works, Debussy’s Clair de Lune (used memorably at the end of Ocean’s Eleven) and the Allegretto from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, a key ingredient of the inspiring radio-broadcast scene in this year’s Best Picture winner, The King’s Speech.

The second half samples a number of original Hollywood scores, including Gone With the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, The Godfather and Schindler’s List.

Local broadcast personality Quin Mathews, a documentary filmmaker and co-host of Art Matters on WRR Classical 101.1 FM, will play onstage host, setting up each piece of music with commentary. For more on Mathews:  http://www.fwsymphony.org/hld/bio.asp?bio=403

These concerts are part of the Star-Telegram Pops Series and are made possible by season sponsors Star-Telegram, American Airlines and Renaissance Worthington Hotel. Promotional support is provided by Star-Telegram and WRR Classical 101.1 FM.
