‘Homes for Special Hearts’ Seeks To Find Homes for 500 Children Awaiting Adoption
Gordon Hartman Family Foundation

September, 2011

The Gordon Hartman Family Foundation (GHFF) and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (TDFPS) have collaborated to create “Homes for Special Hearts,” an effort to find homes for more than 500 special-needs children in Bexar County awaiting adoption.

“There are so many bright, loving and inspiring children that need nurturing, „forever‟ homes,” said Gordon Hartman, GHFF founder. “We hope to educate and encourage potential adoptive parents to consider sharing their hearts and homes with these beautiful, special children. Homes for Special Hearts not only will help ease prospective parents‟ fears but also convey the countless rewards of adopting a child with special needs.”

The first step is to attend one of three 6 p.m. informational meetings – Tuesday, Sept. 27; Tuesday, Oct. 4; or Tuesday, Oct. 11 – at Morgan‟s Wonderland, 5223 David Edwards Drive in Northeast San Antonio. Online registration is available to interested individuals.

Later, a “match party” will be held at Morgan‟s Wonderland, the world‟s first ultra-accessible family fun park designed with special-needs individuals in mind. It‟s a fun-filled event where pre-approved families and children available for adoption get to meet and interact in a pressure-free environment.

“The focus is on getting to know each other, not choosing a child to adopt,” said TDFPS adoption recruiter Annette Landry. “Hopefully in the future, that experience will lead to a transformation – from foster care to a forever home.”

Child Protective Services, part of TDFPS, has children in its care who can never return to their homes because of abuse and neglect that nearly claimed their lives, Landry noted. Some of these children have special needs.

Qualifications for becoming an adoptive parent and additional information can be found at www.homesforspecialhearts.com. Interested individuals also can contact Landry at (210) 337-3528 or Annette.Landry@dfps.state.tx.us.

Founded in September 2005, the GHFF supports the programs, projects and collaborative efforts of Bexar County organizations that serve individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities, with a particular focus on serving children‟s needs in this area.
