Addressing Disparities in How the State Treats Children
Disproportionality is what happens when a particular ethnic or racial population is overrepresented within a public system or program. Over the weekend, SB 501 (West), an important bill to address disproportionality for children, became law.
SB 501 creates a council to study disparities in treatment and outcomes for groups of children, and to make recommendations to move Texas toward more equitable results. This will be the first time state efforts already underway to address disproportionality within the juvenile justice, child welfare, and health care systems will be brought together under one umbrella. What's more, mental health and certain educational services will come under the purview of the new council, as well.
