Southwest Wheelchair Athletic Association Hosting Texas Regional Games for Youth and Adults with Physical & Visual Disabilities
San Antonio Sports & Morgan's Wonderland

April, 2011

The Southwest Wheelchair Athletic Association in conjunction with Wheelchair and Ambulatory Sports USA, San Antonio Sports and U.S. Paralympics is pleased to announce the Texas Regional Games, being held April 15-16, 2011,  at Heroes Stadium and Morgan’s Wonderland Park.  This  is the first regional track meet for athletes with physical disabilities and visual impairments being held in the state of Texas since 2000.

The Texas Regional Games will be a great way for athletes with physical and visual disabilities to experience the feeling of competition, for many this will be  their first time to compete since the onset of their disability,” said Wendy Gumbert, event director.

The Texas Regional Games will provide participants with the opportunity to test their skills in track and field events, archery, air guns and a wheelchair challenge course.  The event will take place Friday evening and all day Saturday and will host over 70 athletes from  across the state of Texas, including athletes from both Fort Hood and Brooke Army Medical Center.

Among the military athletes competing in San Antonio will be Purple Heart recipient and Center for the Intrepid graduate Kortney Clemons (Little Rock, Miss.). Fresh off his Team USA debut at the 2011 International Paralympic Committee Athletics World Championships, Clemons will compete in the 100 meters, an event in which he is the defending national champion (T42) and long jump events.  Clemons completed his rehabilitation at San Antonio’s Center for the Intrepid after  losing his leg to an improvised explosive device while deployed with the U.S. Army in Baghdad, Iraq.  During his rehabilitation, he attended a U.S. Olympic Committee Paralympic Military Sports Camp  being held at  Brooke Army Medical Center and has been training in the sport of track and field ever since.   He now has his sights set representing the United States at the  London 2012 Paralympic Games.
