SHUMLA WELCOMES DEPUTY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ANDREW FREEMAN
SHUMLA is pleased to announce Andrew I. Freeman of San Antonio has accepted the Deputy Executive Director position and began work on February 21st.  Andrew comes to SHUMLA with a strong background in education.

For the past three years he served as Tutoring and Disability Coordinator at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio.  From 2001 to 2008 he was on the faculty of the Taylor Business Institute in Chicago where he rose from Instructor to become Dean of General Education and Acting Evening Dean.  In 2005 he was honored with the Crystal Apple Teacher of the Year Award at the Institute.

Andrew brings a passion for innovative education that focuses on delivery of the highest-quality experience to students.  His duties at SHUMLA will involve overall operations while focusing on education and outreach programs as well as program development.  He will report directly to Executive Director Carolyn Boyd, and will be responsible for supervising education and operations staff.  Dr. Boyd said, “We at SHUMLA are excited to have Andrew bring his keen abilities and his shared vision of goals to help us grow and provide outstanding learning opportunities to children and adults around the world.”

Andrew received a B.A. in 2001 from Beloit College, Beloit, Wisconsin, where he was a double major in Literary Studies and Writing, and earned English Department Honors.  In 2007 he was awarded an M.A. in English (Writing) by Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois.

A native Texan, Andrew grew up in Austin and attended St. Stephens Episcopal School where he participated in the scouting program and attained the rank of Eagle Scout.
He gained an appreciation for all things Texas from his parents who introduced him to the many differing aspects of culture throughout the state and beyond.  His mother, Martha, is a professional historian with a focus on Texas, and his father, Joe, is an architect who has been involved in restoring many historic buildings in Texas.

Andrew helps his father operate a cattle ranch in San Saba County.  His wife Kristin Johnson is a native of Chicago; she specializes in Library Science and is looking forward to new adventures on the Texas border.
