KDK-Harman Foundation - New Strategic Grantmaking Focus in 2011
KDK-Harman Foundation

January, 2011

KDK-Harman Foundation, an Austin-based family foundation, announces  it's grantmaking focus for 2011. The Foundation will refine its grantmaking focus in 2011 through three strategic initiatives: (1) integrating technology into teaching and learning; (2) optimizing out-of-school time; and (3) systems-level change and collaboration. In all of these areas, priority will be given to programs that focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), understanding that the largest gaps in achievement among both low-performing students and high performing students continue to be in the areas of math and science.

“We need to re-imagine how, when, and where young people learn,” states the Foundation’s president and founder, Janet Harman. “How can we ensure that young people are prepared to succeed in the future if our learning approaches are stuck in the past? It is possible for us to dramatically rethink the whole day for students so that learning experiences are seamless and unrestricted by walls, clocks, or calendars.” KDK-Harman Foundation believes that technology can not only transform teaching and learning, adding to the importance of personalized instruction and in keeping with our nation’s students staying at pace with the 21st century, but that technology can open up new avenues for accessibility, mobility, and extended learning time.

“For the last five years, KDK-Harman Foundation has canvassed the complexity of educational issues – exchanging ideas and experiences with fellow education grantmakers across the nation and staying abreast of research findings on proven strategies that make significant impact on student achievement,” states Jennifer Esterline, the Foundation’s executive director. “Our tenure as an education grantmaker is at a point where we can begin to be more strategic in identifying critical issues in education and understanding what works, while also keeping in mind that these areas of focus are in strong mission alignment with our founder’s own passion and vision for the Foundation.”

The Foundation will continue to support Pre-K – 12 programs with an emphasis on STEM, in addition to organizations focused on delivering Pre-K – 12 academic programs during out-of-school time hours. However, it will no longer focus its grantmaking in the areas of family literacy, college access, post-secondary, and adult education. As part of this new initiative, the Foundation will be rolling out a Request for Proposal in time for their spring board meeting to identify strong after-school and summer programs that focus on STEM and that are working specifically to combat summer learning loss. Details about the RFP eligibility and guidelines will be released by the end of January.
