Remember that NAM accepts gently used items in sellable condition, and that items must be in sellable condition to be eligible for a tax deduction.

Gifts of Cash

NAM accepts gifts by check through the mail at: Northwest Assistance Ministries, Attn: President & CEO, 15555 Kuykendahl, Houston, TX 77090. To receive a 2010 tax receipt, the envelope must be postmarked on or before December 31.

Gifts may be made over the phone by credit card by calling the Vice President of Fund Development at 281-885-4605 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              281-885-4605      end_of_the_skype_highlighting. Gifts may also be made online at www.namonline.org, or brought to NAM’s office at 15555 Kuykendahl. When making a donation in person, ask for a member of NAM’s Development Department in the lobby.

Gifts of Stock

Donating stock to NAM may offer more tax benefits than donating cash. Gifts of a publicly traded stock which you have owned for more than one year may result in exemption from capital gains tax on any increase in value, and a federal income tax deduction based on the current market value of the stock. To make a gift of stock, call NAM’s Chief Financial Officer at 281-885-4572 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              281-885-4572      end_of_the_skype_highlighting.

Gifts from IRAs

Included in the Tax Relief Act of 2010. there was an extension of the Charitable IRA Rollover Provision through the end of 2011. This offers a unique opportunity for donors who would like to make a one-time gift from their IRA and who either do not itemize or who are subject to the 2% rule that reduces itemized deductions. Donors interested in such a gift should be aware of the following:

  • Individuals age 70 ½ and over may requests direct transfers of funds from IRAs to qualified charities like NAM without income tax on the gifted funds.
  • The funds must be directly transferred from the IRA to the charity.
  • Each individual may make up to $100,000 in gifts to charity each year under this provision.
  • 2010 IRA rollover gifts may be made through January 31, 2011.
  • For those individuals who have not yet taken their IRA Required Minimum Distributions for 2010, they may partially or wholly satisfy that requirement through an IRA rollover gift.
  • These contributions do not qualify donors for an additional charitable income tax deduction. Avoiding tax on the withdrawal is worth more than the standard charitable deduction.
  • Only standard and Roth IRAs qualify under this law. Other retirement accounts (such as 401K, 403b, SEP, KEOGH, simple IRA, etc.) cannot be used.
  • Donors of IRA rollover gifts cannot receive any personal benefits from the gift, such as charitable remainder trusts or gift annuities.

For more information, please consult your financial advisor. To make a rollover gift from an IRA, call NAM’s Chief Financial Officer at 281-885-4572 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              281-885-4572      end_of_the_skype_highlighting.
