Lubbock Philanthropist Margaret Talkington Passes
KCBD

December, 2010

Margaret Talkington was 95-years-old. She passed away Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. in her home surrounded by close friends.

Talkington was the wife of J.T. Talkington, and both were known for business and philanthropy in Lubbock.  They founded Margaret's, which was a women's specialty store in the mid-1940's.

Just this year, Margaret Talkington was honored by the Texas Education Agency. Also, a Lubbock I.S.D. school, The Talkington School for Young Women Leaders, is named for her.  She is also known for her contributions to charitable causes such as the Lubbock Area Foundation.

Other benefactors of her generosity include: Underwood Center For The Arts, "The Legacy" (a former church in downtown Lubbock now used for public events), various early learning centers, and Talkington Plaza.

Talkington was also a founding member of the Science Spectrum and a new exhibit recreates a portion of her store including the clothes from her private collection and furniture from the store.
