Special Thanks!

For the first year, the state of Texas is No. 1 in the country for the highest number of teenage adoptions! This is huge, and a huge thanks to all of the partners (agency and community) of the Adoption Coalition of Texas, as I am confident our efforts significantly contributed to this increase! Take a moment and think about the impact of our work over the past almost 7 years! It has taken a village and I want to thank each and everyone one of you who have adopted, fostered, donated financially, networked, produced television shows and media stories and advertisements, volunteered, and simply advocated for children in foster care – anything and everyone associated with our work. It is because of this effort that many children now have families! It is a true blessing to know everyone’s efforts are making a difference!

I would also like to welcome our newest team member, Barbara Marion to the Adoption Coalition of Texas.

Give the Gift of a Future!

Each year, the Adoption Coalition of Texas rallies donors to become Secret Santa’s for children in foster care, and, we are doing it again this year (see below). We are eternally grateful for the support. These children need to have positive in their lives!! However, as the years go by and we see the same children year after year, we know what the children really want and need is a forever family. Throughout the year we get to meet so many children, and the basic request is “I want a mom” or “I want a dad” or “I want a family”. That is what we really need to focus on, what our core mission is – so that children do not spend holiday after holiday in the foster care system.

So this year I would like to ask you to Give the Gift of a Future and donate directly to the Adoption Coalition of Texas, $10 makes a huge difference.

As you will see below, we are asking that each Secret Santa donate $10 in addition to gifts. I know it seems like a lot given all of the incredible shopping that is going to be happening, but it will help with recruitment efforts to go out and find families for these children. (Of course, a donation of any size is greatly appreciated!)

As we enter the holiday season, keep these children in mind.

Respectfully,

Secret Santa for Foster Children

Hello everyone! Some of you are familiar with this; some of you will be new to it. But, we are looking for about 100 holiday donors to serve as Secret Santa’s for children in foster care. If you volunteer, you will be matched with one child. We ask that you shop for that child specifically, based on their wish list and what they like to do. We would like for each child to get “about” four items. These do not have to be large items, socks count as an item. We also do not expect that these be expensive gifts. While the kids may put a Nintendo or iPod on their list, they are just wishing, and asking for things that they see other children in school have….But PLEASE do not feel obligated to get anything on the list, have fun shopping. This should be a fun experience for you too and creativity is great. The kids typically do not have long wish lists and our goal is to help augment their holidays. So, the four items seems like a good round-about number for them to open on Christmas morning. Plus, this year, we hope you will also donate $10 towards helping to find a family for these children – giving the Gift of the Future. You can make a donation at the drop off location.

Things with drop off will be a little different than in years past. For the past 5 years, Boyce Industries donated their space and time to this project. Many of you met Tina Boyce and know she just loves helping out at the holidays. (Thanks Tina!). Their business has moved and thus, this year we are setting up new drop off locations. (The location will be sent to you in a week or so as we are currently finalizing the details). A special thanks to Cash Construction in Pflugerville and Roadway Construction off of 1826 for their offer to help this year!!

When you sign up to be a Secret Santa, you will be sent the drop off location specifics and times. For those of you that are out of Central Texas and ship gifts, let Daphne know you need a shipping address and we will get that to you.

So first, we would like to make a list of those willing to participate and as children’s wish lists come in; we can match you and send you more detailed information.

If you are interested and choose to do this, please email Daphne Bamburg at  daphne@austinreps.com by November 19th and we will add you to the list. If you chose to do this, we will be collecting gifts the week of December 6, with the last day to drop off being Saturday, December 11th. Daphne can be reached at 512-288-8088 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              512-288-8088      end_of_the_skype_highlighting. She will be coordinating the donors.

If you have general questions, please feel free to contact Barbara Marion at barbaramarion@adopttexas.org.

Thank you! I cannot believe the holidays are upon us again, time flies!

The Heart Gallery of Central Texas -

September 30th we unveiled the 6th annual Heart Gallery of Central Texas at the Renaissance Austin Hotel. It was a wonderful evening in our new venue. The photographers once again did an absolutely tremendous job with the portraits. It was beautiful to see all of the children’s face around the room. The evening though has a new twist – this year we debuted Beyond the Lens, A Short Film, featuring the Heart Gallery portraits, children’s voices and a story of adoption. If you haven’t seen it, you can watch it at our website www.adoptioncoalitiontx.org. Feel free to share it around! Amy Hadley once again did a fantastic job putting it all together.

The Heart Gallery of Central Texas exhibit is making its way around Central Texas. During the month of November, we have had the full exhibit at First Evangelical Free Church in Austin and the mini-Heart Gallery has been traveling from church to meeting to church. We are thrilled! Once again, the Temple Cultural Arts Center has offered to host the exhibit in January 2011, so we look forward to that opening. A huge thanks to Heart Gallery Director, Lisa Reed, for once again coordinating this project. Lisa is very passionate about the children and we are fortunate to have her!

Kids Corner – Meet Ashlie (11/1997)

Ashlie's Photo - 51095

Ashlie is an energetic, bubbly youth. She enjoys making people laugh, hanging out with her friends outdoors, playing with her dolls, drawing, and writing. Ashlie likes attention and wants to be accepted by everyone. She is learning to build her social skills and positive self-esteem.

In school, Ashlie is maintaining good grades and continuing to work on her peer relationships. She gets along well with her teachers and is able to follow the classroom's directions. Ashlie enjoys being active and energetic, it is important for her to participate in extracurricular activities.

Ashlie requires a family who will give her a loving and nurturing home environment. The family needs to be able to provide her with consistent rules, boundaries, and expectations. Ashlie's family will need to ensure she received any supportive services she requires, to help her overcome her past and to help her adjust to a new home. Ashlie will do well in a home with younger siblings or as the only child.

Ashlie has a younger brother with whom she will possibly want to maintain contact. If this relationship is in her best interest, then it is suggested that her family support this contact as well.
