at Lawndale Art Center beginning Monday, November 15th!

This lively, lavishly illustrated volume, from PaperCity Visual Arts Editor and long-time Lawndale friend, Catherine Anspon, offers a fresh take on the mid-career players (plus a few up-and-comers) upon the rich canvas of Texas's art scene. Sixty-two artists are surveyed via insider studio tours, portraits, and examples of their work, accompanied by concise essays that elucidate each talent's intent, inspiration, and working methods. Published in a collectible, limited edition of 3,000 hand-numbered copies, this memorable survey is presented in an oversized format, producing an art tome as big as Texas.

Priced at just under $100, this volume makes a great gift!

Volunteer Thank You!

Another round of applause for our incredible Día de los Muertos volunteer team! These amazing individuals helped us in every aspect of the multiple events Lawndale hosted over the last few weeks. From installing the retablos to serving hot chocolate during Family Day, they did it all! And we couldn't have done it without them. Thank you!

Citywide Call for Entries

Houston Arts Month
Deadline: December 6

May is "Houston Arts Month"
Tired of Houston's eclectic art scene getting overlooked? So are we. Our city is home to some of the nation's most innovative artists, and now it's time for you to show off. The Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau is holding a contest to spotlight local artists and their work as part of Houston Arts Month happening this May. The winning piece will be featured on the cover of the GHCVB's spring visitor's guide and a seasonal newspaper insert with a circulation of 1 million people. The winning artist will also receive a cash prize of $1,000.

Each entry must be an original work. Artist must explain in 200 words or less how the piece reflects their view of the local arts scene.

Entries received by December 6 will be reviewed by a three-judge panel of respected Houston artists and curators.  From the field of entries, the judges will select three finalist which the GHCVB will then allow the public to vote on via its website, VisitHoustonTexas.com. The winner will be announced on January 3, 2011
