Amarillo vies for $1.5M
Amarillo Area Foundation

October, 2010

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has selected Amarillo as one of four cities across the U.S. to compete for up to $1.5 million to improve the number of low-income adults who finish college or earn a technical certificate.

Officials with the Amarillo Area Foundation announced Wednesday the city's selection to the Partners for Postsecondary Success initiative.

It's part of a Gates-funded national effort to improve postsecondary completion rates among low-income young adults in this area, said Mark Bivins, chairman of AAF.

Sixteen cities applied for the grant, and four were selected to continue: Amarillo, Brownsville and two cities in North Carolina, Charlotte and Raleigh.
