Clinic Provides Free Spay-Neuter Surgery to Qualifying Low-Income Households

The SNAP Mobile Clinic is coming to Fort Bend County.

The Houston mobile clinic will be in Fort Bend County on Sept. 27, 2010, offering free neutering and spaying of cats and dogs to qualifying individuals. The event will be held in the parking lot of the Fort Bend County Rosenberg Annex, 4520 Reading Road in Rosenberg. The clinic will be able to accommodate 22 to 24 animals at this event. There will almost certainly be more clients than the clinic can accommodate. A lottery will be held between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. that will determine each client’s place in line. Clients will then go through the qualifying process. Qualified clients closest to the front of the line have the best chance of having their animal spayed or neutered at the event. There is a strict limit of one animal per household. Full story.

The end of summer draws near, and with it comes the fall Bayou City Art Festival. The 2010 fall festival takes place in downtown Houston near City Hall on Saturday, Oct. 9, and Sunday, Oct. 20. SNAP needs your help to staff the beverage booths on both days. What's involved?  It’s simple. Zipping Up Cat Overpopulation
PetSmart Charities Inc. Awards SNAP Grant to Sterilize Community Cats by Zip Code

PetsMart Charities Logo

SNAP is pleased to announce that PetSmart Charities, Inc., has awarded SNAP a two-year grant ($47,000 in the first year and $46,000 in the second year) to launch a “community cat” spay-neuter program. Community cats, which include tame but free-roaming cats and feral cats, breed indiscriminately, creating yet more homeless cats. These animals are wonderful at controlling the rat and mice population in a neighborhood. Unfortunately, some people find their mating and territorial behavior a problem. Full story.

The event falls during National Dog Week and is a perfect way to celebrate the role of dogs in our lives while also fighting animal overpopulation. Full story.

Tails of Hope from the Corridor
Efforts to Save Animals from De Facto Dumping Ground Pay Off

Some of the many dogs that have been rescued from the Corridor.

SNAP has good news to report from the Corridor of Cruelty and Neglect. Corridor animal champion Deborah Hoffman reports that upwards of 40 dogs and six cats have been rescued from the corridor just since April of this year. Hoffman expressed her gratitude to the rescue agencies that are taking the animals and working to place them in forever homes. Hoffman also thanked SNAP for providing spaying and neutering of the animals, thus improving their chances of eventual adoption. Said Hoffman, "We'd especially like to thank SNAP, Houston's Spay Neuter Assistance Program, for their continued and prolonged hard work altering animals in the Corridor.  Between the dogs and cats that Corridor Rescue saves and those that SNAP sterilizes - we ARE making a difference in the Corridor!" Full story.

How They Spent Their Summer Vacations
While Others Played, These Young Ladies Worked to Help the Animals

Four young ladies who made good use of their summer vacations.

Summer vacation is traditionally a time for school-aged boys and girls to have fun. Some seize the available free time to make a difference though. This summer SNAP was lucky enough to benefit from the efforts of several socially responsible young ladies.

One, MacKenzie Westmoreland, is an eleven-year-old Girl Scout who chose to make SNAP the focus of a merit badge quest by gathering donations of wish list items. Three other girls--Allison Warren, Joanna Warren, and Skylar Rankey--banded together to raise funds through an entrepreneurial effort that involved walking neighborhood dogs. Full story.

Dear Readers,

Do you know someone who is always trying to see what they can get out of you without giving anything in return? They're called parasites, and cats get them too! Find out more in this month's top ten list.
