GIS Essentials™ Workshop in Texas
This basic one-day workshop is designed to teach essential GIS (Geographic Information System) skills as indicated by a survey of 500 GIS professionals, as well as input from several thousand aspiring GIS practitioners. Staff from government agencies, non-profits and universities will find the workshop particularly relevant. This is a brand new class developed by New Urban Research.

The GIS Essentials Workshop - Basic
In the Basic class eleven of the twenty Essential Skills are covered. These include:
• How to download current shapefiles from the Census for any city, county or state.
• How to project shapefiles for your location.
• How to create a geo-database to store files.
• How to create a basic reference map and effective layout .
• How to prepare data in Excel to easily integrate with ArcGIS.
• How to join data to a map and create a thematic map .
• How to geocode address.
• How to perform spatial queries ( attribute and location ).
• How to export to a geo-enabled pdf and how to open the data in ArcGIS Explorer (ESRI's free map browser).
