Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM) has announced that its 2010 Jeans & Jewels Luncheon and Style Show will be held on September 16, 2010 at Shirley Acres. This year’s event is themed “Cowgirl Legends” and will be bigger than ever, with new features including a live auction and live entertainment, and room for more guests in an expanded section of Shirley Acres. Fashions for all ages will be presented by Scruples, Cavender’s and Cakewalk Style Shop. Dana Tyson of Sunny 99.1 will serve as emcee. Irene Skor and Lauren Temple will serve as the 2010 J&J Luncheon co-chairs.
In addition to her many other civic roles, Irene is currently serving on the American Heart Association Emeritus Board of Directors and is the Membership Chair for the Pearl Guild. She also chaired the Pearl Fincher gala in 2009. Irene and her husband, Arnold, have five daughters and seven grandchildren.
Irene became involved with NAM as a founding member of the Cypress Creek Chapter of the National Charity League (NCL) more than 20 years ago. In addition to being a long-time NAM volunteer, Irene also feels an extra connection to the organization: NAM’s Family Violence Center helped a member of her family with emergency placement in a shelter in another city. She feels gratitude for this service and says that co-chairing the Luncheon is one way to express her appreciation. “It was time for me to return the favor and thank NAM for what they had done for our family at an earlier time in our lives,” Irene said.
Lauren Temple got involved with NAM through Junior League of North Harris and South Montgomery Counties, where she serves on the Board of Directors. She has participated in the Back-to-School Program and has contributed to multiple NAM food drives through her church, St. Ignatius.
Lauren works as a Senior Specialty Sales Representative at Abbott Laboratories. She is the President of the Houston Northwest Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Association. “Co-chairing the Jeans & Jewels Luncheon is a great way to get involved and another way to give back to the community,” Lauren said.
This year’s luncheon honoree is Kathy Stevens, a longtime NAM volunteer and a past Jeans & Jewels Gala Co-Chair who has attended every J&J Gala since NAM started the event. “Being named as the Jeans & Jewels honoree has left me speechless and I must admit, somewhat embarrassed,” Kathy said. “ I never thought of helping others as something that needed recognition. It just always felt right. So obviously I am very proud to be honored.”
Kathy began volunteering with NAM through Meals on Wheels when her son was four years old: “The very first house where we delivered the meal my son looked out the back window and said ‘Mom, they don’t have a swimming pool,’” Kathy said. “I knew at that moment that many life lessons were to be learned.”
Kathy has been involved with NAM ever since that day. She believes that giving back to our community is important and a necessity. “ Sometimes when you are preparing to give of your time, it is so easy to say ‘I have so much other stuff I should be doing,” she said. “But after you have spent your time helping others, it is a feeling that is hard to deny. Honestly, I always feel like I am getting more than I am giving, and what could be better than that?”
Kathy and her husband, Jim, have been long-time supporters of many organizations, including the American Heart Association, the Pearl Fincher Museum and Chuck Norris’s “Kick Drugs Out of America.” Kathy’s son, C.J., completed his Eagle Scout project at the NAM Resale Shop, and her daughter, Amanda, is part of the National Charity League.
Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit all of NAM’s programs and services, but as a special gesture of women helping women, luncheon guests are encouraged to save their unused hotel toiletries over the summer and bring them to the luncheon to help the women served by NAM.
