Texas State Historical Association presents awards and research fellowships for outstanding research, teaching, and scholarship in Texas history at its Annual Meeting

The 114th Annual Meeting of the Texas State Historical Association convened March 4 through March 6, 2010 at the Marriott Quorum Hotel in Dallas. Hundreds gathered to experience forty-one sessions on varying facets of Texas history, the first Live Auction in six years, and a Silent Auction.

Amid the activities of the Annual Meeting the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) honored individuals who have excelled in Texas history through research, teaching, and scholarship at the Awards Luncheon on Friday, March 5.

Five awards and six research fellowships are presented annually. The following is a list of all the 2009 award and fellowship winners:

The Texas State Historical Association’s Board of Directors, according to its bylaws, can honor members who have “demonstrated through distinguished published works, or other exemplary scholarly activity, a special aptitude for historical investigation relating to the state of Texas” by naming them a “Fellow of the Texas State Historical Association.”

 

The 2009 Fellows of the Association are Mr. Donaly E. Brice of the Texas State Library and Archives, Dr. James E. Crisp of North Carolina State University, and Dr. Emilio Zamora of the University of Texas.


Mary Jon and J. P. Bryan Leadership in Education Award
given to recognize and honor an outstanding teacher of history in Texas. Mr. Jeffrey Kyle Jones of Sam Rayburn Middle School in Bryan, Texas is the 2009 winner of the Mary Jon and J. P. Bryan Leadership in Education award.

Kate Broocks Bates Award for Historical Research given for a significant piece of historical research dealing with any phase of Texas history prior to 1900. Collin County Community College professor Kyle Wilkison, author of “Yeomen, Sharecroppers, and Socialists: Plain Folk Protest in Texas, 1870-1914,” published by Texas A&M University Press, is the recipient of the Kate Broocks Bates Award for 2009.

Liz Carpenter Award for Research in the History of Women established in 1992 by Ellen Clarke Temple and presented for the best scholarly book on the history of women and Texas published during the calendar year.  The 2009 recipient of the Liz Carpenter Award is Dr. Light T. Cummins of Austin College for “Emily Austin of Texas 1795-1851,” published by Texas Christian University Press.

H. Bailey Carroll Award presented to the best article to appear in the Texas State Historical Association’s Southwestern Historical Quarterly publication.  East Central University professor Christopher Bean, author of "Death of a Carpetbagger: The George Washington Smith Murder and Stockade Trial in Jefferson, Texas, 1868-1869,” is the recipient of the H. Bailey Carroll Award for 2009.

Coral Horton Tullis Memorial Prize awarded to the best book on Texas published during the calendar year. University of Texas professor Emilio Zamora, author of “Claiming Rights and Righting Wrongs in Texas: Mexican Workers and Job Politics during World War II,” published by Texas A&M University Press, is the recipient of the 2009 Coral Horton Tullis Memorial Prize.

Ron Tyler Award for Best Illustrated Book on Texas History and Culture given for a book dealing with Texas history and using special visual applications such as photography and reproduction of historic paintings. The 2009 Ron Tyler Award is presented to Ms. Susan Toomey Frost of San Antonio, Texas for “Colors on Clay: The San Jose Tile Workshops of San Antonio,” published by Trinity University Press.

Mary M. Hughes Research Fellowship in Texas History presented for the best research proposal on twentieth-century Texas History is awarded to Houston Community College professor Michael Botson for 2009.

John H. Jenkins Research Fellowship in Texas History awarded to the best research proposal having to do with Texas history is presented to Dr. Elizabeth Hayes Turner of the University of North Texas for 2009.

Lawrence T. Jones III Research Fellowship in Civil War Texas History recognizing the best research proposal having to do with Texas history and the Civil War is awarded to Ms. Susannah J. Ural of the University of Southern Mississippi for 2009.

Cecilia Steinfeldt Fellowship for Research in the Arts and Material Culture presented for the best research proposal on decorative and fine arts, material culture, preservation, and architecture in Texas from the seventeenth century to the present for 2009 is awarded to Ms. Mary G. Saltarelli of Granbury, Texas.

Fred White Jr. Research Fellowship in Texas History recognizing the best proposal for a book manuscript having to do with Texas history is presented to Dr. Bernadette Pruitt of Sam Houston State University for 2009.
