NAM Helping Hands group lends a hand to girls across the globe
Northwest Assistance Ministries

March, 2010

Northwest Assistance Ministries’ (NAM) Helping Hands crafts group is lending a hand to girls across the globe by making pillowcase dresses for the “Dress a Girl Around the World” project of Hope 4 Women International.

Helping Hands is part of NAM’s Fifty Plus Senior Center. Through the Fifty Plus Center, last year 1,993 seniors participated 7,201 times in activities designed to enhance socialization, physical fitness, and mental capacities.

The members of Helping Hands were drawn to the “Dress a Girl Around the World’s” mission. The project was founded on the belief that every girl deserves the dignity of owning at least one dress. Volunteers across the United States make dresses from pillowcases, which are then distributed to girls in the U.S., Honduras, Congo and Uganda. The project is currently working on dresses for Haiti and India, as well. The completed dresses are patterned sundresses with ribbon straps and accents.

“We are proud that our Fifty Plus Helping Hands group has decided to help this worthy cause,” said Carole Little, NAM President and CEO. “NAM was founded on the principle of Neighbors helping Neighbors, and it is truly gratifying to see our seniors reach out to girls across the world.”
