Fort Bend receives state funds
Around Texas

August, 2009

A state task force has awarded Fort Bend County more than $500,000 to provide free legal defense and social and medical services for poor and mentally ill people arrested in the county on criminal charges.

County officials hope the $517,824 allocated by the Texas Task Force on Indigent Defense will help them fill several new positions for the Fort Bend County Mental Health Defender Program and begin handling cases in December.

The program, which costs $647,280 including a $129,456 county match, will be staffed by two attorneys, four social workers — two with a master's degree and the other with a bachelor's degree — and an office manager.

The grant will continue for four years, decreasing by 20 percent each year while the county steps up its share before completely picking up the tab when the grant runs out.
